Auto transport fraud does not always look like an obviously suspicious website or an unrealistically low quote. In some cases, problems occur when someone attempts to collect a vehicle without being the carrier or driver actually assigned to the shipment.
Before handing over your keys, you should know exactly who is supposed to pick up your vehicle and how to verify that the person standing in front of you is authorized to do so.
Here are the steps every vehicle owner should take.
1. Know the Difference Between Your Broker and Your Carrier
Many customers hire an auto transport broker to arrange their shipment. The broker coordinates transportation and works with a licensed motor carrier that physically picks up and delivers the vehicle. That means the company you booked with may not be the name displayed on the truck that arrives at your home.
That is normal.
What matters is that the carrier arriving for pickup is the same carrier your broker assigned to the shipment. Before pickup, you should receive identifying information about the carrier so you know who to expect.
2. Confirm the Carrier Information Before Pickup Day
Do not wait until a truck arrives to figure out who is supposed to be transporting your vehicle.
Before pickup, confirm details such as:
The carrier company’s name
The driver’s name, when available
The driver’s contact information
Your expected pickup window
Any identifying information provided by your auto transport broker
Keep this information accessible on pickup day. If the person who arrives does not match the information you were given, do not release the vehicle until you have spoken directly with your broker.
3. Be Cautious About Unexpected Changes
Transportation schedules can change. Trucks break down, drivers encounter delays, and carriers sometimes adjust routes. However, an unexpected driver or carrier should never simply be accepted without verification. If someone tells you there has been a last-minute change, contact your broker using a phone number you already have—not a number provided by the unexpected driver. Your broker should be able to confirm whether the change is legitimate.
4. Do Not Release Your Vehicle Based Only on a Dispatch Sheet or Text Message
A document, screenshot, email, or text message may look convincing. That does not necessarily mean it came from the company coordinating your shipment. If anything seems inconsistent, verify it independently.
The safest approach is simple:
Do not hand over your keys until the carrier’s identity has been confirmed through your auto transport broker.
5. Verify the Vehicle’s Condition Before It Leaves
Carrier verification protects against unauthorized pickup, but you should also document the condition of your car before transportation begins.
Take clear photos or video of:
All four sides of the vehicle
The front and rear
Wheels and tires
Windshield and windows
Any existing scratches, dents, or damage
The carrier should also complete a vehicle inspection as part of the Bill of Lading. Review the inspection carefully before signing.
6. Make Sure Everyone Involved Knows Who Is Picking Up the Car
Sometimes the person who books the shipment is not the person handing the vehicle over.
This is common when:
A dealership is releasing the vehicle
A relative is meeting the carrier
A business is coordinating an employee relocation
Make sure the person physically releasing the vehicle has the carrier information. A family member, dealership employee, or other pickup contact should never assume that anyone arriving with a transport truck is automatically authorized to take the car.
7. Contact Your Broker When Something Doesn’t Look Right
You do not have to resolve suspicious circumstances yourself. A reputable auto transport broker should remain involved throughout the transportation process and be available to verify carrier information when necessary.
If the driver’s identity, company name, pickup instructions, or payment expectations do not match what you were told, contact your broker before proceeding. A few minutes spent verifying the information is far better than releasing your vehicle to the wrong person.
